Volume One, Chapter 18: Beating the Reporter with a Stick

Faced with the reporter’s questions, Su Mei was at a loss for words.

As the head of an orphanage, Su Mei was a deeply kind-hearted person.

Upon hearing that all the victims were patients with ALS, a flicker of sorrow immediately crossed her face.

“I don’t know what’s going on. I’m sure there must be some misunderstanding!”

“Yang Feng is someone I’ve watched grow up since he was a child; he would never lie!”

Although Su Mei did not fully understand the situation, she firmly believed that Yang Feng could not have done such a thing.

While she sympathized deeply with the ALS patients, she refused to doubt Yang Feng because of it.

“I’ve heard from the orphanage staff that Yang Feng donates money to the orphanage every month!”

“Is it possible that Yang Feng swindled these funds from the patients?”

“These are life-saving funds for the patients. Doesn’t the orphanage feel any guilt?” the reporters pressed on relentlessly.

They had already decided that the money Yang Feng donated to the orphanage was ill-gotten.

Confronted with their accusations, Su Mei’s face turned pale.

As the head of the orphanage, she treated every orphan like her own child.

As a mother, how could she endure such suspicions?

“All that money was earned by my son through his medical work!”

“He worked hard for every penny; he would never deceive anyone!”

“If it turns out he really did cheat people out of their money, I will return it all to them!”

Su Mei was only the director of an orphanage. What could she do when the reporters cornered her with such harsh questioning?

Her health was already fragile due to her age, and she was feeling unwell.

Yet the reporters showed no mercy and continued to hound her.

“Stop asking me, I don’t know anything!”

“Yang Feng is not a liar; I believe in his character!”

“If Yang Feng really did deceive people, I will find a way to make amends!”

After saying this, Su Mei tried to close the orphanage gates.

Her body trembled uncontrollably as discomfort overwhelmed her.

She had high blood pressure and needed to take her medication immediately.

But the reporters ignored her condition, pressing on with their questions.

Even seeing her pale face did not stop them.

Some even pushed open the gates of the orphanage.

“Director Su, Yang Feng is a fraud. Why won’t you admit it?”

“Yang Feng has deceived so many people. Why are you still defending him?”

“As the head of the orphanage, you should make a public statement to sever all ties with Yang Feng immediately!”

“Yang Feng has swindled all the money from these ALS patients. Countless families have been ruined because of it!”

“As the orphanage director, don’t you bear any responsibility at all?”

After the reporters forced their way inside, their questions became increasingly outrageous.

Their expressions were fierce, as if they wanted to devour Su Mei whole.

Seeing this, Su Mei was utterly terrified.

She was just an orphanage director and had never encountered anything like this before.

For a moment, she was completely at a loss.

To her, it felt as though these reporters intended to consume her.

“Who the hell sent you here?”

“Who told you to harass Director Su?”

Just as Su Mei was about to break down, an angry voice rang out.

Everyone turned to see Ning Qingcheng charging in wielding a wooden stick.

With so many reporters present, one might think they wouldn’t fear a single person.

But Ning Qingcheng’s fierce demeanor and the large wooden stick in her hand struck terror into many.

Seeing her so formidable, several reporters panicked and fled in disarray.

Ning Qingcheng chased after them, swinging the stick.

Those who lagged behind were dealt heavy blows, their heads swelling from the strikes.

“Ahhhh!!!”

Screams filled the air.

“I want to see if you dare come back and cause trouble at the orphanage!”

“Anyone who bullies Director Su again, I won’t be so polite!”

Within moments, all the reporters had fled.

Ning Qingcheng stood at the orphanage gate, cursing loudly at their retreating backs.

Had she not been worried about Su Mei’s fragile health, she would have pursued them for a proper lesson.

When she saw Su Mei approaching, Ning Qingcheng quickly dropped the stick.

“Director Su, are you alright?”

“I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner. You’ve been wronged.”

“Director, are you hurt? I can take you to the hospital right away.”

Ning Qingcheng hurried forward to support Su Mei.

Seeing her pale complexion, she was deeply alarmed.

She had anticipated the reporters’ disgraceful behavior and rushed over to protect Su Mei.

Yet she had still arrived too late to prevent them from relentlessly harassing her.

Unable to bear it, Ning Qingcheng had grabbed a large wooden stick and charged in.

“I’m fine. I just feel a bit unwell. I just need to take some medicine,” Su Mei reassured her.

“Qingcheng, can you tell me, how is Yang Feng now?” Su Mei asked anxiously.

Right now, her greatest concern was not herself but Yang Feng.

“Director Su, don’t worry. Yang Feng is fine!” Ning Qingcheng quickly comforted her.

If Yang Feng found out Su Mei had been bullied, he would surely rush back immediately.

That would only give the reporters more ammunition to slander him further.

“Qingcheng, you’re acting like Yang Feng’s defense attorney!”

“Tell me honestly, what really happened?”

“Did Yang Feng really steal money from the patients?”

Su Mei pressed on.

She was beginning to realize the matter was more complicated than it seemed.

“Director Su, Yang Feng has indeed encountered some trouble.”

“But rest assured, he did not cheat those patients out of their money.”

“It was those patients who accepted bribes from others and falsely accused Yang Feng!”

“Don’t worry too much. I’m a top lawyer in Donghai. I will clear Yang Feng’s name for sure!”

“Once the court rules, everything will be settled.”

“As for these reporters, they were hired by hidden masterminds to tarnish Yang Feng’s reputation!”

To keep Su Mei calm, Ning Qingcheng spoke as lightly as possible.

But the thought of a lawsuit made Su Mei’s heart heavy with worry.

“Will Yang Feng be alright?”

“Why would those reporters want to slander him?”

Su Mei wanted to help Yang Feng but did not know how.

“Director Su, please don’t worry.”

“Right now, your most important task is to take care of your health.”

“If Yang Feng sees you like this, he will only be more worried.”

“With me defending Yang Feng, he will definitely be fine!”

While giving Su Mei her medicine, Ning Qingcheng continued to reassure her.

Only if Su Mei remained healthy would Yang Feng have peace of mind.

If anything happened to her, Yang Feng would be devastated.

Ning Qingcheng knew very well that among all the orphans, Yang Feng was the most filial to Su Mei.
