Chapter 27: The Secrets of the ICU

She held her breath, not daring to exhale, terrified that any movement might disturb the stillness or cause her to miss the slightest sign of life. Her eyes remained unblinking, fixed intently on that hand. Time seemed to freeze in that moment, the air thick with tension and anticipation. Suddenly, the tip of the little finger twitched, as if in response to Wen Wan’er.

Instantly, Wen Wan’er’s heart began to race. Her eyes widened, filled with utter disbelief. She quickly glanced toward the window; though the sunlight outside was bright, it could not dispel the panic and excitement surging within her. She noticed the anxious expression of the nurse standing just outside the door. At that moment, the nurse pushed the door open and entered.

The nurse’s face had been visibly flushed with irritation, clearly annoyed by Wen Wan’er’s behavior. But before she could utter a word of reprimand, Wen Wan’er leaned in and whispered urgently, "Just now, Qiuya’s finger moved. I am certain it wasn't a hallucination."

Upon hearing this, the nurse’s annoyance vanished, replaced instantly by shock. Half-doubting, she crouched down and stared fixedly at Miss Yun’s hand.

Sure enough, this time it wasn't just the little finger that moved; the ring finger also gave a gentle twitch. A flicker of incredulity flashed in the nurse’s eyes.

"I wasn't lying to you, was I? Does this mean…?" Wen Wan’er looked at the nurse, her words tumbling out in a state of breathless excitement.

The nurse took a deep breath and scanned the room, noting that the other nurses were busy and seemingly unaware of the scene. She gently took Wen Wan’er by the hand and hurried out of the intensive care unit. The hallway outside was silent, broken only by the occasional sound of footsteps. They rushed through the corridor and stopped before the door to the emergency stairwell. Pushing it open, they slipped inside and pulled the door shut behind them. The stairwell was dim and quiet, illuminated only by the faint glow of the emergency lights. Leaning against the door, they both struggled to steady their racing hearts.

Wen Wan’er’s face still bore traces of the shock and surprise from moments ago. She stared at the nurse, her eyes filled with expectation. The nurse spoke slowly, her voice tinged with comfort, "Miss, I just took a look at Miss Yun’s condition. Although her hand has regained some sensation, she hasn't opened her eyes yet. However, these are clear signs of waking up. This is wonderful news—it means her condition is improving, and perhaps she will be moved to a general ward soon."

Wen Wan’er did not look happy; instead, she shook her head, her face etched with worry. "No, Qiuya cannot be moved to a general ward. The fact that she is waking up must not be known to He Lingfeng. That man is the last person who wants to see Qiuya recover. If he finds out, he will surely take action."

The nurse looked surprised, seemingly taken aback by how much the girl feared He Lingfeng. After a moment of hesitation, as if weighing her options, she spoke cautiously, "Is Miss Yun’s fiancé the man who appeared the other day—the one who looked like a successful gentleman? He was the one who signed the surgery consent forms, wasn't he?"

At this, Wen Wan’er’s emotions flared. "That man? He’s nothing but a shameless social climber, a glorified bootlicker! Qiuya’s parents happened to meet him once and, thinking he had suffered enough in life, took pity on his work ethic and brought him into the Yun family enterprise. Who would have guessed that he was so calculating? Using his silver tongue, he climbed his way to the top."

Wen Wan’er’s voice cracked, and she covered her face, sobbing. "Three years ago, Qiuya’s parents died in a bizarre car accident, and on their deathbed, they entrusted Qiuya to He Lingfeng. I felt something was wrong back then, and now that I think about it, that accident might have been his conspiracy! Qiuya is gentle and never doubted his motives, but as an outsider, I saw clearly through his double-faced nature. He approached her solely for the Yun family’s wealth and status!"
