Chapter 55: The Relationship Between Wen Yunan and Qing'er
Wen Yun’an’s thoughts flickered like shifting light and shadow, drifting back to that summer when he first met Qing’er.
In the Wen family courtyard, sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting mottled shadows upon the ground, while a faint floral fragrance lingered in the air.
A year ago, Qing’er stepped through the Wen family gates, carrying the shyness and innocence of youth.
At first glance, her figure was well-proportioned—neither plump nor slender—with sun-kissed skin that radiated health under the sunlight, embodying the unique charm of an Eastern woman.
Her dark eyes sparkled with vitality, gleaming with a kind light.
Qing’er’s hair was neatly braided into two plaits, her forehead smooth and flawless, not a strand out of place.
Newly arrived, Qing’er appeared especially timid. Her voice was as soft as a whisper, and her hands habitually fidgeted in front of her, betraying her inner nervousness and unease.
Yet none of this escaped Wan’er’s keen gaze.
Wan’er had met Qing’er by chance and understood her background and insecurities.
Thus, when Qing’er first came to the Wen household, Wan’er generously offered her the room next door, hoping she could find a sense of belonging there.
Qing’er’s straightforward and honest nature quickly forged an unbreakable friendship with Wan’er.
They shared secrets and passed many joyful moments together.
However, to Wen Yun’an, Qing’er was initially just another servant in the household.
He never imagined that this seemingly ordinary girl would leave such an indelible mark on his life.
It was a bright afternoon when Wen Yun’an sat in the courtyard, contemplating a painting.
Suddenly, his gaze was drawn to Qing’er as she trimmed the branches.
Bathed in sunlight, her figure was remarkably lively; her dark, glossy braids swayed gently with each movement. Her profile was sharply defined, as if time itself had frozen.
Qing’er noticed the sudden, intense gaze and looked up, meeting Wen Yun’an’s eyes.
Their eyes locked, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still.
Wen Yun’an quickly waved his hand, explaining, “I mean no offense. I just find this scene incredibly beautiful, and it inspires me.”
Hearing this, a flush rose to Qing’er’s cheeks. She shyly lowered her head, fingers nervously twisting the hem of her clothes, her voice barely audible, “If I can be of help to you, young master, I would be glad.”
Wen Yun’an looked upon her bashful demeanor and felt a strange emotion welling within him.
He smiled and nodded, signaling her to continue with her work. Qing’er, given permission, became even more focused on trimming the branches.
Her movements were so graceful, so natural, as if she were one with the surrounding scenery.
In the days that followed, Wen Yun’an often found reasons to ask Qing’er to pose for his paintings.
During their time together, he discovered that beyond her beauty lay a kind and genuine heart.
Qing’er patiently accompanied him, always striving to fulfill any request he made.
And Wen Yun’an was deeply moved by her sincerity and kindness, beginning to pay her more attention.
Once, while busy in his studio, Wen Yun’an accidentally spilled paint on Qing’er’s clothes.
He apologized hastily, wiping it off with a tissue.
But Qing’er smiled carelessly, “It’s alright, young master. Clothes can always be washed.”
With that, she returned to her tasks.
Wen Yun’an, touched by her generosity and tolerance, realized that his feelings for her had grown deeply.
He also knew the great disparity between their statuses, and that their affection was unlikely to bear fruit.
Thus, he resolved to bury his feelings deep within, hidden from all.
After much inner turmoil, Wen Yun’an decided to study abroad, torn by conflict and hesitation.
He understood that leaving might mean he’d never see Qing’er again, yet he feared falling deeper into a love he could not escape.
In the end, he resolutely embarked on his journey overseas.
When he returned to the Wen household, it was Wan’er’s urgent call that summoned him back.
Though he initially considered refusing, the thought of seeing Qing’er again persuaded him to come.
He planned to have a heartfelt conversation with her once the exhibition concluded.
Yet fate dealt him a cruel blow—this return became their final meeting.
