After Lu Qianan put in the things he had bought, the refrigerator was instantly filled to more than half its capacity.

Looking at the neatly arranged dishes, all of them the foods she loved, Qin Miaoyu turned her face away and said as if nothing were amiss, “All right, then you cook. I’m going to the living room.”

“Okay. I’ll call you when it’s ready.”

Qin Miaoyu went back to the sofa and took out her phone, wanting to kill some time, but her attention kept drifting toward the sounds from the kitchen.

When she realized that several minutes had passed and the phone was still on the very first screen, Qin Miaoyu irritably set it down on the coffee table.

She discovered that when he was absent, it was actually fine. When she could not see him, she very rarely thought of Lu Qianan; at times, this even made her feel as though she no longer kept him in her heart.

But now that Lu Qianan was in the kitchen, it seemed as if she could not help noticing him at every moment.

A year ago, when she learned that Lu Qianan’s identity was anything but ordinary, she had truly been furious.

Back when she had entered into that hasty marriage with Lu Qianan, her original intention had been to find someone from an ordinary family whom she could also bring herself to stand, and have him help her deal with matters at home.

If she had not married Lu Qianan in such a rush, she might have found someone else with decent qualities in every respect to handle things at home, or else she might have gone all in against the Qin family, even if it meant inflicting a thousand wounds on the enemy while losing eight hundred herself.

But who could have imagined that Lu Qianan would hide such an imposing family background?

And she, precisely, did not want to seek out such a person.

Yet over the course of the past year, even that little anger of hers had slowly faded.

After all, to be honest, Lu Qianan had only concealed certain things from her, and those things were merely ones she herself felt somewhat resistant toward. There was no deep enmity between them, much less any monstrous wrongdoing.

Once she had come to terms with that, her anger toward Lu Qianan had lessened considerably.

Besides, Lu Qianan truly had nothing to reproach himself for in the way he treated her.

In fact, at the very beginning, during those especially lonely nights when the world was silent, she would occasionally think back to the times when Lu Qianan had kept her company.

She thought she probably could not endure the feeling of being alone for long, and then agreed to work together with Xu Xiaoqi, who had also planned to focus on wedding planning, and the two of them began taking orders and working in collaboration.

Once life became busy, there was no spare time left to think about those people and those matters.

Later, by chance, she ran into Lu Qianan. The two of them climbed a mountain together like friends, and after that, she placed all her heart and mind on travel and on her newly begun career. From then on, she very rarely thought of Lu Qianan again.

So she had always believed that the matters of the past were over. She only needed to wait until the two-year term was up, obtain the divorce certificate with Lu Qianan, and after that there would never again be any intersection between them.

But now, how long had it been since she returned? She had already encountered Lu Qianan on more than one occasion.

She had not originally wanted too much entanglement with Lu Qianan either. But if she did not help him deal with the people from the Lu family, he would not be willing to keep to their agreement.

Still, was there really no other way?

She stared blankly out the window, not hearing Lu Qianan calling her several times from the kitchen.

Only when Lu Qianan came near and gently patted her shoulder did she come back to herself and ask, “What is it?”

Lu Qianan said, “I couldn’t find the spatula in the kitchen, so I came to ask whether you don’t have one or if you put it away.”

Qin Miaoyu immediately stood up. “I’ll look for it. I remember there was one before; I probably put it away by accident.”

There was a cabinet at the corner of the kitchen. Qin Miaoyu opened it and searched around, and sure enough, she found the spatula.

She handed it to Lu Qianan. “Anything else missing?”

“For the moment, no. Are you free now? If you are, could you unwrap those bottles of seasoning on the counter for me?”

Having just been caught daydreaming, Qin Miaoyu naturally did not have the face to say she was of no use, so she agreed and went to unwrap the seasonings.

Lu Qianan stood beside the sink, watching Qin Miaoyu obediently go off to help, the corners of his mouth faintly lifting.

Realizing that she would only wander into stray thoughts if she stayed outside, Qin Miaoyu simply did not go back out. She stayed in the kitchen to help Lu Qianan, chopping scallions, ginger, garlic, and chilies, or washing vegetables and handing things over.

They had done such things often when they were still together, and by now it had become second nature. The atmosphere in the kitchen immediately took on a touch of warmth.

Lu Qianan had originally intended to make only the dishes Qin Miaoyu liked, but Gu Jing’s tastes were slightly different. Coincidentally, among the ingredients Lu Qianan had bought there was what he needed to make a dish Gu Jing loved, so she had him make that as well.

Lu Qianan silently took note of Qin Miaoyu’s words, intending to claim a favor from his little uncle when the time came.

Qin Miaoyu did not manage to stay in the kitchen until the meal was finished, because Gu Jing, in a drunken frenzy, came stumbling out of the room, shouting that she wanted to see Xia Lingyan and saying that whatever Xia Lingyan had said before must have been a lie, or else how could he have disappeared?

Hearing this, Qin Miaoyu pressed a hand to her forehead.

Originally, Xia Lingyan had been going to take Gu Jing away.

But Qin Miaoyu did not know exactly what the two of them’s situation was now, and she was not at ease, so she only had Xia Lingyan coax Gu Jing and then bring her back.

No matter how Qin Miaoyu tried, she could not calm Gu Jing down. Hearing the ghostlike howling from outside, Lu Qianan simply came out of the kitchen.

“Just call my little uncle directly and let him coax his own girlfriend.”

It was not that Qin Miaoyu had not thought of that method, but she did not have Xia Lingyan’s contact information, and Gu Jing’s phone had a password, so it could not be unlocked.

“Use my phone. It’s in the pocket of my coat, and the password has never changed.”

Qin Miaoyu’s hand, reaching toward Lu Qianan’s coat, paused for a moment before she went to take the phone instead.

She knew Lu Qianan’s phone password. It was her birthday.

Following Lu Qianan’s guidance, she found Xia Lingyan’s chat window and made a video call. As soon as the other side answered, Qin Miaoyu pointed the phone at Gu Jing, then had Gu Jing take the phone and speak for herself.

Perhaps Xia Lingyan’s voice on the other end was too gentle and pleasant, for Gu Jing immediately quieted down and spoke softly with him.

Seeing Gu Jing like this, Qin Miaoyu let out a breath of relief. She thought that next time, she absolutely could not let Gu Jing drink herself into such a state again, or else there would be no way to calm her down afterward.

What Lu Qianan had said also turned out to be true.

When Qin Miaoyu and he were eating at the dining table, a video call from Grandma came in.

Lu Qianan showed the name Grandma on the screen to Qin Miaoyu, and Qin Miaoyu immediately understood, moving to sit beside him.

When the video connected, a kindly and benevolent face appeared at once.

Qin Miaoyu called out softly, “Grandma.”

Cao Xiuhua on the other end was very happy.

“Oh, Miaoyu, have you eaten yet?”

“We’re eating now, Grandma. Look.”

Qin Miaoyu gestured toward Lu Qianan, and he immediately turned the camera toward the dishes on the table.

“That looks good. Lu Qianan made this, didn’t he? That boy really has a way with cooking. When I first tasted his handiwork, I even joked that if he were sent to study to become a chef, he’d probably turn into a master cook in no time.”
