Chapter Two: The Young Girl Comes Calling
Tap, tap, tap.
“Whew!” Hearing the sound of his little sister shuffling away in her slippers outside the bathroom, Cheng Feng was finally certain it was indeed his real sister. He let out a long breath of relief.
He turned on the faucet, scooped up cold water in his hands, and splashed his face vigorously. By piecing together the memories of the body’s original owner, he had finally figured out what had happened tonight—why the original Cheng Feng had caught the attention of a vampire.
Yesterday after school, near the on-campus gym, the original Cheng Feng had been confessed to by a female transfer student from his class.
Her beautiful looks and shy expression had stabbed straight through Cheng Feng’s young heart. Seventeen years of singlehood had made him a naive boy, unversed in any romantic tricks, and he had fallen into her trap without the slightest resistance.
The girl’s name was Jiang Qian. She and Cheng Feng, smitten at first sight, had officially become a couple. Apart from telling his two closest friends, Cheng Feng hadn’t breathed a word, so the news hadn’t spread around the school.
Then, last night after school, Jiang Qian had mentioned the recent string of crimes she’d seen on the news and said she was scared to walk home alone at night.
With all the righteousness of a young man, Cheng Feng had assured her there was nothing to fear—he would walk her home himself.
In a deserted alley, the girl showed her true colors. She revealed her monstrous nature as a vampire and killed Cheng Feng with a bite.
With these memories in place, Cheng Feng finally understood: the original owner wanted to date a girl, while Jiang Qian simply wanted a meal.
Truly, desire is a double-edged sword. All he’d wanted was a girlfriend, to taste a bit of life at the top, and in the end, he’d lost his life for it.
The world really had gone downhill; people’s hearts were not what they once were.
But now the question was...
What about tomorrow?
He was still in high school, so of course he would have to go. He’d undoubtedly run into Jiang Qian again, and that monster would surely come after him.
What should he do? Report her to the local branch of the Disaster Association?
That wouldn’t work... There was a good chance the Association wouldn’t catch Jiang Qian before she came for him first. After all, she’d said herself tonight that she wouldn’t let him go.
Unlike other transmigrators, Cheng Feng wasn’t alone—he had a family and couldn’t just up and disappear whenever he wanted.
Wait a minute... something’s off...
Cheng Feng flexed his fist. Now that he had his cheat ability, what was there to fear? He just had to charge ahead and see what happened. There was only one word for it: fight!
A vampire? Who bit whom still wasn’t certain!
Jiang Qian, was it? See you at school tomorrow.
The more he thought about it, the more excited he became. Cheng Feng’s confidence swelled. He got dressed, gripped the door handle, and gave a powerful twist. With a loud crack, the handle snapped off.
Door handle: “...”
Cheng Feng scratched his head, realizing he’d forgotten about his [Super Strength]. It was a passive skill—he’d have to learn to control his force from now on.
Back in his bedroom, Cheng Feng gazed at the pale gray wall and activated his [X-ray Vision]. Sure enough, his gaze penetrated the thick wall, revealing the darkened room next door.
In the darkness, his little sister lay on her bed in Pikachu pajamas, playing on her phone, a bashful smile on her lips.
“It’s late—still playing on your phone? Go to sleep! Don’t you have school tomorrow?” Cheng Feng shouted toward the next room.
His sister, startled like a frightened animal, blinked her large eyes and glanced around, clearly confused as to how her brother knew without coming in.
Having teased his sister, Cheng Feng drifted off into a satisfied sleep.
......
The next day.
“Brother, time to get up!”
Early in the morning, his sister came to wake him.
“Alright, alright,” Cheng Feng mumbled, burying his head under the warm covers.
“If you don’t get up now, breakfast will get cold!” His sister stood with hands on her hips, her delicate little face making her look even cuter, not at all intimidating.
Cheng Feng knew she was just teasing him. His lazy voice came muffled from beneath the quilt. “You’d better get to school or you’ll be late and have to stand outside as punishment.”
“Hmph! Keep this up and you’ll turn into a big lazy pig.”
After his sister left for school and his father left for work, Cheng Feng finally opened his sleepy eyes and glanced at his phone.
7:40.
He got up, tidied his bed, dressed, went to the bathroom, washed up, brushed his teeth, ate breakfast, and prepared to head to school.
Ding-dong, ding-dong—
The doorbell rang.
Cheng Feng hurried over, but stopped abruptly. Who would be dropping by this early in the morning?
Could it be that vampire girl?
If so, perfect timing!
He dashed to the kitchen, grabbed a kitchen knife, and returned to the door, concealing the blade behind his back.
Outside stood a young woman.
Her black hair cascaded to her waist, her face exquisite and cold, dressed in a blue blouse and plaid skirt. Her shapely legs, wrapped in sheer black stockings, were enough to make anyone’s heart race.
At the hormonally charged age of high school, it was hard not to be affected by such a beautiful peer. Cheng Feng paused, then realized she was the one who’d saved him last night. “It’s you.”
Liu Shiyu noticed the kitchen knife hidden behind his back and gave him a look as if to ask, “What’s with the knife?”
Cheng Feng tossed the knife back toward the kitchen and, acting nonchalant, repeated, “It’s you.”
Liu Shiyu: “......”
She ignored the incident, stepped inside, and asked, “You’ve become a vampire, and you still plan to go to school?”
Cheng Feng had just shut the door and was about to thank her for saving his life when he heard this. He turned to her in disbelief. “Are you here to capture me?”
“So you guessed. I am indeed a member of the Disaster Association, specializing in capturing monsters. I don’t let any dangerous creatures roam freely among people.”
Her gaze was calm as she regarded Cheng Feng. “You were bitten last night. In the next couple of days, you’ll begin to crave blood and attack humans. I can’t let that happen.”
Cheng Feng scratched his head. “I haven’t turned into a vampire—I won’t hurt anyone.”
Liu Shiyu didn’t seem to listen. “Many people say that after being cursed by monsters, but how many innocents have they killed once they turned?”
Cheng Feng fell silent. He knew she was being polite by not immediately resorting to force.
But he couldn’t think of any way to prove himself. He changed the subject. “If you take me in, what will happen to me?”
“Most likely... you’ll be eliminated,” the girl replied coolly.
Cheng Feng’s eyes widened. “You’d kill me even though I haven’t hurt anyone?”
Liu Shiyu glanced at him. “The Disaster Association always handles supernatural creatures this way. Did monsters ever show mercy when preying on people?”
The impact of supernatural beings on human society was growing, and as the government’s official demon-hunting agency, the Association could not allow any monsters to survive.
Not even ones who claimed not to harm people.
“But I’m not a monster,” Cheng Feng argued. “I don’t even have fangs. See for yourself.”
Liu Shiyu leaned in for a closer look. “Aren’t those fangs?”
“Those are canines!”
“Oh...”
She drew closer, scrutinizing his expression for any hint of a lie. “You really haven’t become a vampire?”
“No.”
Their eyes met, and Cheng Feng suddenly thought of something. “By the way, are you really a member of the Disaster Association? You look about my age.”
The Supernatural Disaster Association was an official government demon-hunting organization. Its members couldn’t possibly be minors.
Yet the girl before him seemed no older than he, surely still a high schooler herself.
So young, already a member, and with such formidable combat ability—it was hard not to be curious about her background.
“That’s none of your concern. I’m the only exception in the Association. Don’t underestimate my efficiency just because I’m young.”
She changed the subject abruptly. “It’s about time. Please come with me.”
Hearing this, Cheng Feng realized he was out of options. If she insisted on taking him by force, a fight was inevitable.
Judging by last night, her strength was formidable—enough to make the terrifying female vampire avoid a confrontation.
Was he really supposed to just give in?
Since reason wouldn’t work, he’d have to let her taste his [Super Strength].
They locked eyes, tension mounting, until Liu Shiyu suddenly said, “I’ve defeated many vampires, but you don’t have their distinctive scent. You’re probably telling the truth...”
Cheng Feng couldn’t help but protest, “Then why didn’t you believe me earlier?”
Liu Shiyu pinched her chin, as if pondering her answer.
“So that’s it—you were testing me! How underhanded!” Cheng Feng realized. She’d known from his scent that he wasn’t a vampire, but wanted to be sure, hoping to force him to reveal any vampiric powers in a fight.
But this girl now seemed to think she’d been overly cautious; Cheng Feng hadn’t acted aggressively at all, behaving just like a normal person.
At that, Cheng Feng finally relaxed. He’d almost ended up fighting her. If he’d revealed his superhuman strength, she might have suspected him all over again.
