Chapter Ninety-Three: Battle with the Werewolves
Xue Ju was terribly tense. Joyce the werewolf was notorious in Crimson Moon City as a killer of rare cruelty, a monster who delighted in smashing enemies apart with steel claws. If you fell into his hands, he would tear you to pieces.
“I won’t let you catch me!”
Xue Ju bit her lip, her legs trembling, and turned to run.
“Hah. Think you can escape right in front of me? How naive.”
Watching her fleeing back, Joyce let out a vicious grin, baring bright white fangs. The steel claws on his hands flashed with a cold glint as he surged forward.
Those blade-sharp claws needed only half a second to rip Xue Ju into shreds.
Crash!
Suddenly, a blinding blue flare burst from the left, and with a dull thunderous impact, a flying foot狠狠 kicked Joyce in the waist.
“What?”
Out of the corner of his eye, Joyce saw only a flash of brilliant blue lightning before he was sent flying. His body slammed into a wall nearby, punching a human-shaped hole through the brick, dust exploding into the air.
Hearing the commotion behind her, Xue Ju turned around and exclaimed with delight, “Cheng Feng?!”
Cheng Feng looked back at her panic-stricken face. “Are you all right? Looks like I got here in time.”
“Waaah, you scared me to death.” Tears welled in Xue Ju’s eyes as she rushed up, trying to hug him.
Cheng Feng answered with a sharp knife-hand strike to her head without the slightest politeness. “Didn’t I tell you not to go wandering outside? If you were looking for someone, couldn’t you wait until daylight?”
“Ow, ow, ow!” Xue Ju clutched her head, tears in her eyes. “I won’t dare next time.”
“Get out of here. I’ll handle that thing.”
“Then be careful.”
Xue Ju glanced toward the drifting dust in the distance and warned Cheng Feng, “That monster’s true form is a werewolf. In Crimson Moon City, he’s one of the strongest assassins. He’s no weakling, a monster at the great-demon level.”
“Great-demon level...”
Cheng Feng’s expression grew grave. After Xue Ju left, his gaze shifted to the cloud of dust, where the dark outline of the monster could be seen rising to its feet.
“You bastard, you actually ambushed me...”
Joyce lifted his head and fixed Cheng Feng with a cold stare.
As an assassin, he was the one who should be ambushing others. Being ambushed for the first time by an enemy filled him with an especially fierce mixture of shame and fury.
“Spiritual Power Release.”
Cheng Feng murmured the words and entered combat mode, unleashing the supernatural force within his body. His black eyes lit up with searing white radiance and transformed into silver pupils.
It should be stated here that low-tier monsters are equivalent to trainee members, while high-tier demons are equivalent to official members.
And monsters like Joyce, who were at the great-demon level, were classified as S-rank threats in the Disaster Association’s combat missions.
S-rank monsters were extremely powerful, and only elite-level members could deal with them.
Cheng Feng’s current strength could only be called half an elite at best. His title of elite member had been earned through competition, so his combat power was somewhat hollow.
Compared with truly elite members like Liu Shiyu, there was still a considerable gap.
Facing an S-rank opponent like Joyce would probably not be easy, so Cheng Feng did not dare to be careless. He immediately used Spiritual Power Release and entered his best state.
“Dream on if you think you can escape!”
Joyce did not attack Cheng Feng. Instead, he chased after Xue Ju’s fleeing direction. As an assassin, his first priority was to complete the mission.
Cheng Feng would not let him succeed. Summoning his Spirit Blade, Thunder Cutter, he flashed after him and brought the blade down at Joyce.
Joyce had already been suppressing his rage toward Cheng Feng, and now that Cheng Feng dared to block him, the fury he had been holding back erupted at once.
He glared at him with murderous intensity; if looks could kill, Cheng Feng would already have been riddled with holes.
“You’re asking for death!”
Stopping abruptly, Joyce turned around. Dark green demonic power gathered upon his steel claws, which instantly extended to twice their original length, and he slashed at Cheng Feng as he came in.
“Bring it on.”
Seeing that his opponent intended to meet him head-on, Cheng Feng immediately activated Thunderclap Flash. A thunderous draw-slash tore out like a streak of lightning, carrying a terrifying momentum that could sever anything in a single stroke.
If he could not win outright, he would at least cripple the enemy.
Clang!
Steel claws and spirit blade smashed into each other with brutal force. A deafening clash of metal rang out like the sky splitting apart, and a surging wave of air spread outward from the two of them.
Buildings on both sides of the shopping street trembled as cracks of varying sizes split their walls. Several parked cars nearby were lifted and hurled away by the shockwave, as if a dreadful gale had swept through.
Under the recoil, Cheng Feng was forced backward, his feet dragging uncontrollably across the ground.
He drove the tip of Thunder Cutter into the earth before him. Under the force pushing against him, rubble flew everywhere, and the blade carved a deep furrow into the ground before he finally managed to bleed off the remaining momentum.
By contrast, Joyce merely took several steps back before steadying himself. He suffered no injuries at all.
“Is that all you’ve got? Pathetic.”
Joyce grinned and casually seized a car even larger than himself. Amid the grating shriek of twisted metal, he hurled it toward Cheng Feng, who stood seven or eight meters away on the street.
Cheng Feng abruptly used Thunder Shadow Step to accelerate, vanishing from Joyce’s sight in an instant.
The car missed completely and smashed into a lamppost instead.
Meanwhile, Xue Ju, who had been running all this while, suddenly stopped. She was worried about Cheng Feng’s safety.
In Crimson Moon City, aside from the Four Generals, Joyce the werewolf was one of the strongest monsters around. With Cheng Feng’s current strength, there was no way he could beat him. Only if Liu Shiyu came would they have any real chance.
Then, the bone pendant hanging at her chest began to glow, proving that the Black Yaksha was nearby.
The sudden burst of joy left Xue Ju momentarily stunned. She turned her head and saw an upscale maid cafe, where a figure inside was wiping the display window.
Xue Ju’s face lit up. “I finally found it...”
On the other side, Joyce also activated his own speed ability, and the two of them battled at extreme velocity.
Swish!
Cheng Feng slashed horizontally with all his strength, cutting into Joyce’s neck. Blood spurted out, and Thunder Cutter’s edge managed to bite halfway in before losing force, unable to completely sever the neck.
As a werewolf, a creature of the undead, that level of injury was still not enough to kill Joyce.
“Damn brat...”
Joyce clamped down on Thunder Cutter’s blade, preventing the sword from slicing farther into his neck.
Cheng Feng continued to force it, gripping the hilt and pushing forward. He had Super Strength, giving him a slight advantage in raw power. It was a contest of strength between the two of them.
Holding the blade tightly, Joyce glared at Cheng Feng at arm’s length. “You brat, you’re a demon hunter. Why are you helping that cat demon?”
Cheng Feng narrowed his eyes. “If she dies, I won’t be able to stop your boss from becoming king. And when that happens, Winterfall City will face a disaster.”
“So you knew that too? That cat demon told you everything, did she? In that case, let me give you another piece of bad news.”
Joyce suddenly gave a cruel smile. “Both you and that cat demon are going to die.
Tonight is the full moon. I can release my true power. And now... I’ll show you real terror!”
Danger!
The passive ability Crisis Warning rang an alarm in Cheng Feng’s mind.
