Chapter 84. I’ll Carry You the Rest of the Way
During the period when Kaneki received Rize’s transplanted organs, there was surprisingly little disturbance around him. Perhaps that was because of the news spread by the few Paradise transmigrators Sota had let escape last time.
There was, however, something rather laughable about it: the reputations of CCG and the ghouls were both improving. It was not due to anything particularly grand. In ordinary city incidents where someone witnessed injustice, the Paradise transmigrators would step in to help, and more often than not those helpers turned out to be either CCG agents or ghouls. Ghouls were still creatures everyone wanted to condemn, of course, but that did not stop people from slightly changing their view of them. As for CCG, its reputation had always been quite good in Japan and even around the world; it only tended to be overly extreme at times. In truth, matters of this scale amounted to little more than that.
A few days later, Kaneki returned to Muyang’s side, though he did not go to school. The moment Kaneki left the hospital, Sota contacted Muyang and used his unwell condition as the excuse to arrange a leave of absence. By then, Muyang was sitting in Anteiku, drinking coffee brewed by the manager himself. The taste was wonderful, to say the least—far superior to the instant coffee and bottled coffee he used to buy at the supermarket.
Carried by that pleasant mood, Muyang went to find Kaneki. Yet the moment they met, Kaneki bit him and even tore away a piece of flesh. Muyang’s flesh was poisonous, and once Kaneki swallowed it, his stomach began to rot. Fortunately, Muyang had excellent control over his own toxin and immediately halted its spread through Kaneki’s body. Otherwise, Kaneki would not have died at the hands of the Paradise transmigrators, but by the hand of the one trying to protect him.
Even with the toxin removed, Muyang’s flesh still contained a great deal of RC cells. After the poison was purged, Kaneki’s body not only recovered, but the kagune within him also began to break through the limits of his body, and a faint bulge had already risen along his back. Seeing no sign that Kaneki would wake anytime soon, Muyang carried him to his own room.
Looking at Kaneki’s face and thinking of the road that lay ahead of him, Muyang let out a quiet sigh. Then, gazing at the unconscious young man, he said, “All of this being placed on your shoulders so suddenly is both a burden and a duty. You are the child favored by this world; one might even say the world turns because of you. If not for my crossing over, we might never have met in our entire lives. But we did meet, and that is our fate. The system gave me only one task: for you to survive, and for the world’s course to remain unchanged. Nothing else. So you walk the first half of the road, and I will carry you through the second.”
There was no special reason. Muyang simply saw in Kaneki the child he himself had once been: someone who had done nothing wrong, yet still forced all the blame upon himself. He did not want Kaneki to become like he was now. Even if Tokyo Ghoul had once ended with Kaneki and Touka building a happy family together, things were different now.
The Paradise transmigrators had begun by attacking Rize, the Binge Eater, and then attacked again after Kaneki and Rize were crushed. If he and Sota had not been there, Kaneki might already have died.
As for Sadako, things were going well there too. Although she had not killed many people in these past few days, far more people had learned of her. Once the stories spread widely, Sadako’s power had begun to grow as well. That was good news, so Muyang let her continue...
