Chapter 87: The Shepherd (Part Two)

“Then try it!”
As soon as he finished speaking, the lizard’s kagune tail struck at Mu Yang once more. Seeing the attack come again, Mu Yang was no longer courteous either. He took Justice from his spatial ring and fired straight at the lizard.

The lizard had assumed it was only an ordinary firearm. For ghouls below the S rank, ordinary guns were indeed a threat; but to an S-rank ghoul, such weapons were little different from toys. Their bodies could already largely withstand the impact of bullets. To injure them, one needed at least a quinque forged from a kagune, and even then the damage depended on the quality of the kagune used in its making, as well as the wielder’s own strength and technique. All of these factors were closely intertwined.

But Mu Yang’s shot exceeded the lizard’s expectations. The bullet from Justice punched straight through the lizard’s chest, tearing open a massive wound. Even worse, the ghoul’s regenerative ability was being suppressed by some strange power, leaving the wound unable to close.

The gaping wound across his chest was not fatal to the lizard, but it left him temporarily unable to move. Even so, he did not give up on attacking Mu Yang. Taking advantage of Mu Yang’s momentary inattention, he drove his tail kagune straight through Mu Yang’s chest.

“How could a mere human possibly be a match for a ghoul?” the lizard said arrogantly after seeing Mu Yang’s chest pierced.

“Is that so? Unfortunately for you, I’m not human,” Mu Yang replied with a smile, and at the same time he stepped down hard on the wound in the lizard’s chest.

“What!” The lizard stared at Mu Yang, who was still alive, in utter shock. From his perspective, anyone whose heart had been pierced should have died instantly. Yet Mu Yang was not only alive, he could still move freely.

“No need to be so surprised. After all, I’m not human,” Mu Yang said with a grin.

Then he stomped again on the lizard’s wound and said, “So, will you join or not? If you still refuse, I can only kill you. Your kind of combat strength is rare among ghouls, yes, but others will still join. You’re not indispensable. Make your choice.”

Though the lizard remained unconvinced in his heart, the threat of death left him with no choice but to agree.

“That’s more like it. I’m not someone who refuses to pay,” Mu Yang said. At the same time, he drew back the toxin from his finger, broke off the finger, and handed it to the lizard.

The lizard hesitated for a moment, then swallowed it. The wound pierced by Justice healed at a speed visible to the naked eye. He looked at Mu Yang with both astonishment and confusion, for he had just seen the severed finger grow back before his eyes without knowing when it had happened.

“Don’t look at me like that. I can tell you this: although my flesh contains a large amount of RC cells, if it is eaten without my permission, my meat is no different from poison,” Mu Yang said, his smiling expression fading as his tone turned cold.

The lizard slowly stood up, but his eyes were still fixed on Mu Yang.

“What? You don’t believe me? I’ll let you try again.”

Mu Yang broke off another finger, but this time he did not remove the toxin from it. He handed it to the lizard, and the lizard this time did not hesitate, swallowing it at once.

As a result, the poison began corroding the lizard’s stomach, then started eating away at his body. Just a few seconds before the toxin was about to take effect, Mu Yang controlled it and drew it back into his own body.

“Now you understand, yes? Without my control, my flesh is no different from lethal poison,” Mu Yang said.

Although the lizard had swallowed another finger and gained a great deal of RC cells, cold sweat still broke out across his back, because if Mu Yang had not restrained the toxin just now, it would have killed him on the spot.
