Chapter Sixty: Countermeasure

“This is only natural. Once that girl is cured, I can retire from the martial world at last,” Xue Gui nodded, speaking to Xiao Ye.

Just as Xue Gui was packing his things to leave Jiangnan and head to his next medicinal gathering spot, Xiao Ye’s phone suddenly rang.

“King Xiao, Lin Feng’s mercenaries have discovered our location and are heading towards Jianghai City!” Chilong’s voice on the other end was tense.

“They’re bold, but don’t panic—I’ll be back right away,” Xiao Ye replied coldly.

Since Lin Feng refused to behave, Xiao Ye resolved to act himself and put an end to his disruptions.

At Chilong’s overseas base, hundreds of mercenaries advanced under cover of night. Surveillance cameras atop the base captured their figures clearly, but no one dared to open fire.

The local leader waited anxiously. In terms of numbers and equipment, the branch base could not possibly match the enemy.

“Our boss said someone would come to guide us in battle, but so much time has passed and not a shadow has appeared,” the leader fretted, worried they might not last until this person arrived.

“Forget it, we can’t wait any longer. Everyone, follow my orders—prepare to fight!” he shouted, instructing his men to grab their gear.

Outside, the mercenaries prepared to approach head-on, and at that moment, Xiao Ye finally arrived.

To prevent misunderstandings, he had the taxi stop nearby and approached the base on foot.

At the rear of the base, temporary squad members stood guard. Xiao Ye didn’t have time to identify himself and simply rushed inside.

“Who’s the commander here? I need to see him!” Xiao Ye entered the base, his voice echoing, drawing everyone’s attention.

“Sorry, Captain, this man just barged in. I’ll take him out right away,” the guard at the door apologized, moving to throw Xiao Ye back outside.

But the leader intervened. “Wait, you must be King Xiao! We’ve all been waiting for you,” he said, excitement in his voice.

Xiao Ye nodded. The run had left him flushed, so he removed his jacket and stepped up to the leader.

“King Xiao, look—the mercenaries are right outside the base, ready to engage at any moment.”

Xiao Ye glanced at the uniformed mercenaries outside and let out a cold laugh.

“They’re hoping to catch us off guard, seize the initiative, and break through the base. Fine—send two snipers to the roof and show them what we’re made of.”

The leader quickly relayed the order. Chilong had made it clear: once Xiao Ye arrived, the entire base was to follow his command.

The snipers took position, and as Xiao Ye counted down, sparks flashed in the darkness. The sniper rifles fired two shots, striking two enemy soldiers in quick succession.

Loaded and triggered, the snipers, hidden like reapers in the night, began cutting down the opposing mercenaries one by one.

Lin Feng saw the counterattack and believed his scheme was working. Eager to strike, he felt all the more confident about capturing the base.

“Brothers, for what we’ve lost and for our honor—attack and destroy this base now!” Lin Feng shouted, and hundreds of mercenaries charged toward the Xiao family villa.

The two snipers continued firing from the roof, but the suppressive fire from the enemy was so intense that, as they neared the base, the snipers couldn’t get off another shot.

Facing the surging mercenaries, Xiao Ye had already devised his strategy within the base, waiting for the enemy to storm in.

As the night wind swept into the base, the once brightly lit compound was plunged into darkness.

Though every soldier was equipped with night vision goggles, their field of view revealed nothing but emptiness—no one remained in the base.

“Watch for ambushes. Keep moving,” Lin Feng raised his arm in a cautious gesture, prompting everyone to slow their steps and scan their surroundings warily.

The group advanced slowly in the dark. The base was eerily silent, broken only by their own breathing, when suddenly a strange sound—a metallic clack—reached their ears.

Lin Feng reacted instantly, shouting, “Watch out for explosions!”

But before he finished, a ball of fire erupted before him, instantly engulfing the front ranks of the mercenaries.

At that same moment, gunfire erupted throughout the base.
