VIP Volume Chapter 128: The Sovereign of One
Ye Xiaoxuan took Little Fish by the hand and used the sleeve of the coat draped over her shoulders to wipe the water droplets from her forehead. He put on a stern face and said, "Don't you ever make me worry like that again!"
Little Fish felt a surge of sweetness in her heart and nodded in agreement. "I won't! It’s just a pity that Big Sister's phone is likely beyond repair."
Guan Ling looked at the two of them with envy and said, "The data is on the memory card, so it doesn't matter. I'll just get a new phone! Let's head back; I haven't eaten, and I'm starving!"
At the mention of food, everyone's stomachs began to growl, and they hurried back to eat. Ye Xiaoxuan lingered at the back with Little Fish. Once the others were out of earshot, he frowned and asked her, "What exactly happened back there?"
Little Fish knew that while her man might not be a master of martial arts, he was never short of miracles and possessed a sharp mind that could see through anything. Realizing she couldn't hide it from him, she answered honestly, "Did I almost die, only to come back to life?"
The scene of Little Fish taking poison that night had become a nightmare for Ye Xiaoxuan; there was no way he could forget it. He nodded and said, "Yes. Later, the doctor said your breathing had stopped, but your heart was still beating. They called it a state of suspended animation."
Little Fish nodded. "That's exactly it! My consciousness was a bit hazy back then. I could feel all of you beside me, but I just couldn't wake up. However, I could feel the changes in my body. It was so strange!"
Ye Xiaoxuan asked in surprise, "What kind of changes?"
Little Fish recalled, "I felt as if every pore on my body had opened up and widened, like tiny little mouths, all breathing."
Ye Xiaoxuan stared at her, stunned. The words of Dr. Sun from that night suddenly flashed through his mind: "She is breathing through her skin!" It was true! She really was breathing through her skin!
Ye Xiaoxuan pointed behind them. "So, when you were in the water just now, you were breathing through your skin?"
Little Fish nodded. "Yes. I can use my skin to exchange oxygen while underwater. Water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen, which means as long as there is water, I can breathe. I can never be drowned!"
Ye Xiaoxuan stared blankly at her and muttered, "My wife is actually a fish spirit. I've truly seen it all now!"
Little Fish pinched him and laughed, "Get lost! Fish don't breathe through their skin!"
Ye Xiaoxuan chuckled, "Then what does? Should I call you an earthworm spirit instead?"
Little Fish gave him a playful punch in the chest. "Go to hell! That's awful! Actually, you're quite strange yourself, and I've realized that all of us are a bit strange."
Ye Xiaoxuan frowned. "All of us?"
Little Fish nodded. "You, me, Jiaran, and Big Brother."
Seeing Ye Xiaoxuan's confused expression, Little Fish counted off on her fingers as they walked. "You don't even need to be mentioned—you're like a cockroach that never dies! And your red eyes; these are not traits a normal person possesses."
Ye Xiaoxuan nodded and said, "I overlook mine, you overlook yours, but Jiaran... I’ve actually been suspicious, too..."
Little Fish said excitedly, "You’ve suspected it too? That means our guess is likely correct! Are you suspicious of her..." She pointed to her own eyes.
Ye Xiaoxuan nodded immediately. "Exactly. Jiaran's tears are very strange! But how did you know?"
Little Fish huffed. "Like I said, I was still conscious that night, just unable to open my eyes or wake up. I could feel Third Sister crying, and when her tears flowed into my mouth, I felt the poison I had swallowed melt away. My body felt comfortable, and every pore relaxed..."
Ye Xiaoxuan recalled the several life-or-death situations he had faced, each time narrowly escaping disaster thanks to Jiaran’s tears. Now that Little Fish had experienced the same thing, it was clear that a great secret lay hidden within Jiaran’s tears—they might truly possess the power to bring the dead back to life!
"But..." Ye Xiaoxuan scratched his head. "What is strange about Big Brother?"
Little Fish shook her head. "I just feel that he isn't like other disabled people. When someone loses an arm, they subconsciously protect the injured side. For example, if their left arm is gone and a knife flies toward them, their body naturally turns to the left to hide the missing limb. But Big Brother never does that!"
Once Little Fish pointed it out, Ye Xiaoxuan realized the oddity. Big Brother neither protected his side nor feigned weakness; he seemed to act as if that arm were still whole, as if he still possessed two perfectly functional arms.
Ye Xiaoxuan knew this wasn't just psychological self-suggestion; it was woven into his habits. His mind knew he had one arm, but his body never considered itself disabled. It was the exact opposite of how others behaved.
Little Fish took Ye Xiaoxuan’s hand. "Do you know why I asked my father to come over today?"
Ye Xiaoxuan grinned. "Isn't it for a formal meeting between families? Like an engagement?"
Little Fish blushed and scolded him, "Go away! Can you be serious for once? I invited him so he could see all of you, and then report back to his superiors to check the records at the Hunter Hall. It might help us uncover our true potential!"
Ye Xiaoxuan frowned. "Hunter Hall?"
Little Fish smiled. "It's a branch of the Qitian Group, dedicated to gathering intelligence—commercial, civilian, anything useful. They have a department specifically tasked with researching these kinds of extraordinary people and events."
Ye Xiaoxuan took a deep breath and shook his head. "Don't you ever let your father reveal our information to this Hunter Hall!"
Little Fish asked curiously, "Why? Don't you want to know how great your potential is?"
Ye Xiaoxuan shook his head. "Remember, with great power comes great responsibility, and the more choices you have to face. If others learn too much about you before your wings are fully grown, it’s a path to certain death."
Little Fish’s face turned pale. She looked at Ye Xiaoxuan in shock. "Are you saying... did I do something wrong?"
Ye Xiaoxuan shook his head. "No! Your father hasn't told them anything yet. Besides, I don't have a good impression of the Qitian Group. I know a group that big is bound to have both good and bad elements. What I’ve seen doesn't represent the whole, but I don't want them knowing my secrets either."
Little Fish nodded. "I understand. I didn't think it through. I won't act on my own again. I just wanted you to be valued by the Qitian Group so that no one would call you a loser anymore..."
Ye Xiaoxuan laughed heartily and gently brushed his finger across Little Fish’s cheek, his expression filled with pride. "Remember, I only stand up for myself and my family! No one is qualified to be my superior. I am the master of my own fate! Do you understand?"
