Actually, the spot where the girl was hanging wasn’t very high—just over two meters off the ground. Ye Dajun could easily reach her by stretching out his hand or simply moving a chair over to help her down.

As the saying goes, worry makes one clumsy. Ye Dajun was so focused on rescuing her that nothing else crossed his mind. Just as he was about to climb up, a sharp snapping sound echoed above. Startled, Ye Dajun shouted to the crowd, “Stand back!” Suddenly, the girl fell from the sky right into his arms.

Yuer patted her small chest and sighed in relief, “You scared me to death!” Ye Xiaoxuan glanced at Guan Ling, who was squinting fiercely, staring intently at the girl.

With one arm hooked around Ye Dajun’s neck and the other clutching an apple, the girl pressed the fruit into Ye Dajun’s mouth and said, “Here, eat this!” Ye Dajun gently set her down, bit into the sour green apple, his teeth nearly recoiling from the tartness, yet he still grimaced and said, “Delicious…”

Guan Ling slowly approached the girl, sneering coldly, “You make a convincing act! Aren’t you supposed to be a martial arts expert? How did you end up hanging from a tree? You come here pretending to be crazy—what exactly is your purpose? How did you manage to kill three strong men with such ruthless methods?”

Both Yuer and Ye Dajun stared at Guan Ling in bewilderment, not understanding what she meant. Only two remained calm: Ye Xiaoxuan, who knew well where Guan Ling’s anger stemmed from, and the girl herself. But the girl’s calm was actually ignorance. Clutching a half-eaten, mangled green apple, she munched and spat bits everywhere with unbridled enthusiasm, utterly oblivious to Guan Ling’s words.

Guan Ling rushed forward, grabbing the girl’s shoulder firmly and said angrily, “I’m asking you! Answer me! Who are you? What are you doing here? How did you kill those three men? Who sent you?”

The girl seemed barely able to hear her, humming some indecipherable tune from deep in her throat. Behind the mask, her small mouth kept noisily chewing the apple, spitting out the fragments, almost splattering Guan Ling.

Furious, Guan Ling was about to pull her away from Ye Dajun when he suddenly grasped her wrist, removing her hand from the girl’s shoulder, his face darkened as he asked, “Second sister, what are you doing?”

Guan Ling anxiously explained, “Brother, she’s not crazy, she’s faking it! Last night she killed three men—villagers from nearby. I want to take her back for interrogation!”

Ye Dajun shielded the girl behind him and said coldly, “I think you’re the fool. A girl like her—who could she possibly kill?”

Little Yuer also tugged at Guan Ling’s hand, saying, “Yeah, big sister, are you sure you’re not mistaken? How could Yaya be a murderer?”

Guan Ling stomped her foot in frustration, glaring at Ye Xiaoxuan’s indifferent expression and hollered at him, “Deadbeat! What are you standing there for, acting all cool? Tell them if what I said is true or not!”

Ye Xiaoxuan sighed helplessly and turned to her, flicking her forehead teasingly. “Can you try to control that fiery temper of yours? With your detective work, you scare off the snakes before you even have evidence, ruining the case before it starts!”

Guan Ling crossed her arms, sulking, “I trust my instincts. That girl is definitely the murderer!”

Ye Dajun took a deep breath, his voice tinged with anger he could no longer hide. “Even if I were to kill someone, Yaya wouldn’t. She wouldn’t even harm a butterfly. Second sister, stop this nonsense. If you scare Yaya, I won’t let you off either!”

Guan Ling’s eyes reddened. Just as she was about to speak, Yuer grabbed her arm and shook her head.

Ye Xiaoxuan approached the girl with a smile, “Hey, girl, can I have a bite of that apple?”

The girl looked at Ye Xiaoxuan’s masked face and said, “Ah—” Ye Xiaoxuan opened his mouth obediently, “Ah—”

With a rapid spitting sound, the girl sprayed a mouthful of apple bits all over Ye Xiaoxuan’s face, then grabbed Ye Dajun’s hand and took off running.

“Damn you!” Ye Xiaoxuan wiped his face with his sleeve, cursing at her, “If I don’t teach you a lesson today, you won’t know how terrifying I can be! When I get angry, even I tremble!”

Yuer laughed so hard her stomach ached, pointing at Ye Xiaoxuan, “Bad guy, your attempts to cozy up won’t work. Besides big brother and third sister, no one else matters to her!”

Guan Ling was exasperated, both crying and laughing as she stamped her foot. “Believe me! That girl is faking it! You little punk, say something in my defense!” But Ye Xiaoxuan had already vanished without a trace, out of earshot.

Yuer held Guan Ling’s hand and said, “Big sister, maybe you’re mistaken. I know a bit about medicine. I examined Yaya’s eyes—her pupils are cloudy, her irises disordered and confused. These are signs of mental disorder, not something a normal person can fake!”

Guan Ling was stunned, staring at Yuer in disbelief. “Really? When did you check?”

Yuer nodded. “This afternoon. Somehow she found her way to Sister Caiyi’s place. Her eyes were clouded from lime exposure, so we cleaned them with cooking oil. That’s when we saw her pupils like that.”

Guan Ling was momentarily dazed. If the girl truly had cognitive impairment, all her suspicions collapsed—the real culprit was someone else.

Yet, Guan Ling still trusted her intuition. The girl didn’t seem as harmless as she appeared; she must be connected to this string of murders somehow.

Besides, having a mental disorder didn’t mean losing the ability to kill. There was still one way to confirm if she was the murderer—remove the mask and check for martial rank marks.

Meanwhile, Jiaran had prepared dinner. The elders ate inside, while the younger ones gathered in the courtyard. Strangely, though the girl was wild and playful, as soon as Ye Dajun held her and fed her, she obediently sat on a bench without running around.

Ye Xiaoxuan, still uneasy about the orchard incident, kept his distance and called out, “Girl, take off your mask for dinner!”

The girl didn’t even turn her head, opening her mouth expectantly for Ye Dajun to feed her, ignoring Ye Xiaoxuan. Ye Xiaoxuan gave Ye Dajun a meaningful look.

Ye Dajun also found the mask troublesome. Just as he reached to remove it, the girl suddenly shouted, “Big White Rabbit!” and dashed out the gate.

Guan Ling frowned deeply, sneering at everyone, “I told you, she wouldn’t dare take it off!”

Ye Dajun placed his bowl down heavily and hurried after her, then cried out in surprise, “It really is Big White Rabbit!”
