The middle-aged policeman fixed a burning gaze on Ye Xiaoxuan, his face breaking into a smile as he said, “Young man, you saved my life. Thank you!”

Ye Xiaoxuan chuckled, waving his hand dismissively. “It’s not that serious. Judging by your temples, you’re a skilled Martial Guard yourself. Even if I hadn’t pushed you, you would’ve dodged it on your own!”

The policeman burst out laughing, clapping Ye Xiaoxuan on the shoulder. “Maybe five or six years ago you’d be right. But I’m getting old now!”

The young policewoman moved aside and said to the migrant worker, “You almost committed manslaughter! Come with me and give a statement first…”

Ye Xiaoxuan turned to her. “Sister, let’s just drop it, shall we? They didn’t mean any harm, and no one got hurt. There’s no need to make things difficult for them.”

Her large eyes flashed with indignation as she snapped at Ye Xiaoxuan, “Who are you calling sister? You think it’s over just because no one died? Even if it’s accidental injury, the law still applies. Do you know anything about the law? You could even get some compensation for emotional distress. Are you stupid?”

Ye Xiaoxuan shrugged and replied, “If I wanted compensation, I wouldn’t ask poor workers for it. There’s a whole public institution here—why not hold them responsible? You’ve been renovating for days; don’t tell me you couldn’t see the hazards? If anyone’s to blame, it’s you people. Why target poor folks? Is that what the people’s police do?”

“You—!” Her face turned pale with anger, finger trembling as she pointed at him, speechless. Ye Dajun hurried over to smooth things over, tugging Ye Xiaoxuan’s arm. “Watch what you say, this is a police station!”

He cast a glance at the policewoman, his face flushing bright red, quickly lowering his eyes in embarrassment.

The middle-aged policeman spoke sternly to the young woman, “Lingling, let it go.” She protested, “Dad!”

He shot her a glare, then turned to the two workers. “Clean up and go home for the day. Finish the work tomorrow, and be careful from now on.”

The two workers, gratefully reprieved, put away the ladder and fled. The policeman turned back to Ye Xiaoxuan, smiling. “Young man, what brings you here?”

Ye Xiaoxuan sensed that this man must be a superior officer and quickly replied, “I’m looking for someone—the girl you brought in from Reed Village this morning. Where is she now?”

A small-town station like this didn’t have many people, and any action was quickly known by all. The middle-aged policeman remembered immediately. “Yes, that’s right. She finished her statement around noon and left. We wanted to take her back, but another girl came and picked her up.”

Another girl? Ye Xiaoxuan frowned, somehow producing a stalk of grass and sticking it between his teeth. Could it have been Hua Lingluo?

The policewoman eyed him with disdain. “Who is she to you? A relative?”

Ye Xiaoxuan smiled, understanding her skepticism. He looked ordinary, while Wen Xiaoyu was so stunning that even women envied her. Standing together, no one would believe they were anything but distant relatives.

Ye Xiaoxuan flicked the grass stem in his mouth, chewed twice, and grinned. “She’s my girlfriend—my fiancée.”

Though she had half expected that answer, the policewoman still seemed unconvinced. For reasons she couldn’t explain, even though he’d just saved her father’s life, she felt no fondness for him. His careless, roguish air irritated her.

This kind of hooligan—lacking both looks and character. Judging by his clothes, he probably didn’t have fifty yuan to his name. The girl this morning was obviously a pampered city heiress, the type who’d have a line of rich boys trailing after her on the street. How could she ever fall for a country bumpkin like him?

Ye Xiaoxuan couldn’t be bothered to argue. Without Wen Xiaoyu, he could only go to Qiyun Tower to look for her. Without a word, he grabbed Ye Dajun’s arm and turned to leave.

The middle-aged policeman called after him, “Young man!” Ye Xiaoxuan turned. “Yes?”

“Are you from Reed Village too? How much do you know about the case your girlfriend was involved in?”

Ye Xiaoxuan didn’t answer right away, his eyes darting as he tried to gauge the officer’s intent.

Ye Dajun piped up, voice booming, “My brother was the one eaten by the lake monster—he’s back now, safe and sound. Isn’t that amazing?!”

He looked triumphantly at the policewoman, only to find her eyeing him curiously. Startled, he blushed and ducked behind Ye Xiaoxuan.

With such a loudmouthed brother, there was no hiding the truth, even if Ye Xiaoxuan wanted to. He could only nod helplessly. “I’m involved too.”

The policeman’s eyes lit up. “Then come with me…” He glanced at the time and changed his mind. “You saved my life today. I must thank you. Let me buy you dinner—will you do me the honor?”

Ye Xiaoxuan hesitated. “I just ate, unfortunately.” Ye Dajun clutched his stomach miserably. “I’m hungry…”

Left with no choice, Ye Xiaoxuan said, “Alright then, thank you for your generosity.” He put heavy emphasis on the word “brother,” then turned to the policewoman and said, “Come on, niece, let’s go together!”

She could take no more. With a cry of rage, she aimed a kick at Ye Xiaoxuan’s head, shouting, “You bastard, who are you calling niece?!”

A blur of movement—her kick landed on Ye Dajun’s shoulder instead. Though she hadn’t used full force, Ye Dajun’s left arm was withered and weak; she’d almost broken the fragile bones inside.

Seeing she’d kicked the wrong person, and a disabled one at that, the policewoman felt a pang of guilt. She stamped her foot and scolded Ye Dajun, “Why’d you get in my way? Move aside!”

Ye Dajun shook his head, blushing as he said, “Hit me if you have to—just don’t hurt my brother!” She scolded him, “Are you crazy? I wouldn’t hit you if you didn’t run your mouth!”

The policeman turned to her. “Lingling, if you keep this up, you’re not coming with us. Go home.”

She immediately pouted, whining, “Dad, I’ll behave!”

Ye Xiaoxuan, raising his voice deliberately, asked, “Elder brother, may I ask your surname? What’s your position at the station?”

The policewoman’s fists clenched, her eyes wide with fury, jaw grinding as she muttered, “Just wait, you’d better not fall into my hands…”

The policeman laughed. “My name is Guan Du. I’m the chief here, and that’s my daughter, Guan Ling.”

So he was the station chief—equivalent to a deputy township chief! Ye Xiaoxuan realized this was the highest-ranking official he’d ever met. He didn’t dare push his luck further and replied quickly, “Chief, I really can’t let you go to too much trouble. Any three-star restaurant will do just fine.”
