VIP Volume Chapter 061 Causing a Stir at the Melody Pavilion (Part One)
Again, the Old Nine Gates, and again, the Qitian Group! From the first time Old Shepherd mentioned these two names, then Little Fish, and now the Guan father and daughter. Ye Xiaoxuan couldn't help but put down his wine cup and muttered, "Just how deep are the roots of Qitian Group?"
Guan Du sighed and said, "Very deep! So deep that even the city bureau doesn't dare to provoke them. The chief personally called to instruct us not to disturb these people's lives, just wanting to suppress the whole case!"
Guan Ling fumed, "Let them dream their grand dreams! To treat such a huge case as if it never happened—are we still police officers? Are we even human?"
Ye Dajun raised his palm, about to clap Guan Ling on the shoulder, but suddenly remembered she wasn't his brother, so he awkwardly withdrew his hand and mumbled, "I support you!" Guan Ling shot him a glare. "What's the use of your support!"
Ye Xiaoxuan curled his lip, glanced at the father and daughter before him, and said, "I think your days in uniform are numbered! Since even the city bureau has hinted at you, you two small-town police officers still want to go against the higher-ups? That's a textbook case of short-circuiting your brain! If it were me, I'd run as far as possible. If you can't afford to offend them, why insist? That's just foolish!"
Guan Ling shouted angrily, "Are you still human? Forty lives lost and you can pretend nothing happened?"
Ye Xiaoxuan nodded. "Yes! Don't forget I'm a hooligan. Not to mention forty, even four hundred have nothing to do with me! It won't earn me a profit or reduce my losses, so why should I care?"
Guan Ling snorted, "No one's asking you to care! Just tell us honestly what you know!"
Ye Xiaoxuan wiped his mouth, stuck a root of grass between his teeth, and smiled at her. "I've told you everything I know. I really don't know where I was those six days, because in my memory, those six days don't exist! I suppose my girlfriend gave you the same answer."
Guan Ling fell silent. She had taken Wen Xiaoyu's statement herself, and it was indeed the same. Both of them didn't look like they were lying. But how could such a bizarre thing happen? All the witnesses confirmed the two had been away for a week, but the people involved only remembered one day.
Ye Xiaoxuan stood up and said to Guan Du, "Thank you for your hospitality, Chief. I’m full!" He kicked Ye Dajun's stool, and Ye Dajun, coming to his senses, said, "But I barely ate!"
Ye Xiaoxuan glared at him and grumbled under his breath, "You were full just looking at pretty girls. Why bother eating?"
Guan Du didn't try to stop him. He asked the owner for pen and paper, wrote down a number, and handed it to Ye Xiaoxuan. "If anything comes to mind, call me! Even if it's not about the case, I'd like to make friends with you."
Ye Xiaoxuan tucked the note away and asked with curiosity, "I'm the most notorious good-for-nothing in the whole township, while you're the chief who can stir up clouds and rain in Zhuangyuan Township. Why are you holding me in such regard?"
Guan Du laughed heartily, patting his shoulder. "Who’s holding whom in regard, that’s yet to be seen! Remember, if anything happens, call me. Business or personal, I’m always here to talk."
Ye Xiaoxuan nodded, pulled Ye Dajun onto the motorcycle, belched out a puff of black smoke, and disappeared around the corner.
Guan Ling said crossly to Guan Du, "Dad, I really don’t get it. Why are you so polite to that little hoodlum?"
Guan Du watched Ye Xiaoxuan’s receding figure and sighed, "Anyone who thinks he’s a waste, an ordinary ruffian, is the real fool here! That young man’s future is limitless!"
Guan Ling curled her lip in disdain. "All I see is a cold-blooded coward!"
Guan Du smiled slightly and asked, "Do you really think he’s afraid to provoke Qitian Group? Guess where he’s going now?"
Guan Ling asked in surprise, "Don’t tell me—to the Qi Family Hotel?"
Guan Du nodded. "That kid acts against all expectations. The more you can’t guess, the more likely he’ll do it! He’s a strange one. He can’t fight, but even someone of my Martial Guard rank would find it hard to lay a finger on him! Lingling, as a police officer, you must observe people carefully. Don’t be fooled by appearances!"
The motorcycle weaved through the alleys before finally emerging onto the only main road in town, stopping outside a rather upscale hotel.
Ye Dajun looked up at the neon sign and asked Ye Xiaoxuan, "We don’t even know which room Little Fish is staying in. How do we find her?"
Ye Xiaoxuan gave him a look of disdain, parked the bike, and said, "With a brain like yours, you still want me to bring you to the city one day? What’s that mouth under your nose for?"
Ye Dajun blushed and said, "Then I’ll go ask!" He was about to step into the lobby, then turned back. "But she couldn’t have booked the room herself—the front desk won’t know her!"
Ye Xiaoxuan shot him another scornful glance. "Who said you should ask?" He strode into the street, cupped his hands around his mouth, and shouted up at the building, "Wen—Xiao—Yu!"
Ye Dajun: "..."
A young man in a white shirt and tie came out, waved at Ye Xiaoxuan, and scolded, "What are you yelling about? Do you know where you are? Wailing like a banshee and disturbing our guests—will you take responsibility?"
Ye Dajun covered his face in embarrassment. "We’re looking for someone. Is his girlfriend inside?"
The man in white looked Ye Xiaoxuan up and down, then sneered, "From Reed Village, huh? Your girlfriend here? Is she in catering or housekeeping? Judging by your looks, probably cleaning staff, right?"
Ye Xiaoxuan certainly looked eccentric—his short jacket nearly a monk’s robe, half his shoulder exposed, feet in flip-flops, one leg splattered with mud as if he’d come straight from the rice paddies.
Clearly, the man thought Ye Xiaoxuan was looking for some hotel worker. Ye Xiaoxuan snorted and said, "My girlfriend is a guest here. Her name’s Little Fish. Go ask at the front desk for me."
The man in white didn’t budge. "Little Fish, Little Shrimp, never heard of her! Move along, this isn’t a place for bumpkins like you to stay!"
Even Ye Dajun was annoyed now. He glared at the man and said, "Watch your mouth!"
Ye Xiaoxuan waved him off and turned to the man. "Fine, we’ll go in and look for ourselves, all right? Just tell us which floor the new guests checked into this afternoon!"
The man pushed his shoulder, snapping, "You think you can just barge into any room you want? I’ll say it again—this isn’t a place for country bumpkins like you! Move along, don’t block the doorway!"
Ye Xiaoxuan was getting riled up too. "So what if I’m a bumpkin? You run a hotel, not a crematorium—why keep out the living? Today, I’m going in to find her, whether you like it or not!"
