Wen Xiaoyu felt as though she had truly become a little fish, swimming joyfully amidst the waves, riding crest after crest with the foam. That intense sensation—pain entwined with pleasure—was unforgettable, no wonder girls remember their first time for a lifetime. It was an experience to be savored only once, impossible to forget.

She didn’t know how much time had passed before Ye Xiaoxuan, satisfied at last, trembled at the sound of her long cry and collapsed onto her body. He pulled the sheet over her, fighting off sleep as he sat up, about to get out of bed. Wen Xiaoyu grabbed his arm from behind and asked, “Where are you going?”

Ye Xiaoxuan leaned down to kiss her lips, speaking softly, “I’m going to wash up. You stay still, I’ll bring water back in a moment.”

Wen Xiaoyu nodded with a smile. “Alright!” She watched him leave, and then, with a secretive gesture, reached beneath the pillow for something she clutched in her palm, her gaze fixed on the doorway. In a low voice, she called out, “Husband! Xiaoyu loves you!”

After a while, Ye Xiaoxuan returned carrying a basin, wetting a towel with a guilty expression. “There’s no water heater at home, just cold water. Sorry to trouble you.”

Wen Xiaoyu sat up. “It’s fine, I can do it myself!” Ye Xiaoxuan gently eased her back, nibbling her ear, “Don’t move, let me do it. Your body hasn’t recovered yet.”

Wen Xiaoyu blushed shyly, nodding. Her body was his now, so she wasn’t afraid to let him touch or look. With a flushed face, she let him clean her thoroughly.

Once back in bed, Wen Xiaoyu’s icy body pressed tightly against Ye Xiaoxuan. She whispered in his ear, “Xiaoxuan.”

Ye Xiaoxuan replied, half-asleep, “Hmm?”

Wen Xiaoyu stroked his face, “Do you love me?”

Ye Xiaoxuan murmured an affirmation.

She pressed further. “Will you still send me away?”

Ye Xiaoxuan, barely able to keep his eyes open, mumbled, “I’m not sending you away… You can stay a few days, I’ll come…come for you…”

Wen Xiaoyu bit her lip, tears streaming down her face. “I’ll never leave you, not even in death! I don’t know how I came to love you so deeply, so quickly, but I’ve never regretted it. I don’t want to hear you tell me to go. I want to stay by your side forever!”

Ye Xiaoxuan rolled over to embrace her. “Alright, alright, a lifetime. Now sleep.”

Wen Xiaoyu lifted her arm, slipped the thing she’d been holding into her mouth, closed her eyes, and swallowed it whole. She clung tightly to Ye Xiaoxuan’s arm. “Next life, don’t send me away again.”

Ye Xiaoxuan’s breathing deepened as he drifted off, not hearing her words.

Even asleep, Ye Xiaoxuan felt uneasy, as if something momentous was about to happen. It was as though he had dreamt of Wen Xiaoyu’s strange, enigmatic smile.

“Xiaoyu!” Ye Xiaoxuan suddenly awoke, clutching Wen Xiaoyu tightly. “What were you smiling about just now?”

She didn’t answer; her body had grown chillingly cold.

Ye Xiaoxuan, alarmed, let go and turned on the light. The sight before him nearly drove him mad.

Wen Xiaoyu’s body was rigid, fists clenched, her face ashen, jaw locked, lips already black and purple—a sign of poisoning.

“Xiaoyu!” Ye Xiaoxuan cried out, lifting her in his arms, rubbing her cheeks and arms frantically, trying to warm her.

Wen Xiaoyu’s lips trembled, and she slowly opened her eyes, gazing at Ye Xiaoxuan’s tear-streaked face. She asked weakly, “Xiaoxuan…do you love me?”

Ye Xiaoxuan nodded vigorously, tears streaming down, unable to speak from his anguish.

Wen Xiaoyu smiled faintly. “I know…you love me… You asked…what I was smiling about… I was laughing at you…for lying… You want…to be with me forever… Your heartbeat…can’t lie to me…”

Ye Xiaoxuan wiped his tears, hurriedly dressed both himself and Wen Xiaoyu, bent to lift her. “Don’t talk, I’m taking you to the hospital!”

Wen Xiaoyu shook her head. “No! I don’t want…to make another choice! If you don’t want me, I’d rather die!”

Ye Xiaoxuan sobbed, “Silly Xiaoyu, how could I ever bear to lose you? I want you to get better, to be my wife, to live with me! I’m taking you to the hospital now! What did you take?”

Wen Xiaoyu’s smile was sorrowful, her voice weak. “It’s…the poison you gave me… That pill! Husband…with your words, Xiaoyu is…content…”

The Water-Repelling Pearl! Ye Xiaoxuan had no idea if it was fatal, but since it was King Anaconda’s heart pill, it probably wasn’t meant to be eaten. Wen Xiaoyu’s face was turning greener, her lips blacker—the sight was terrifying. Clearly, it was deadly poison.

Wen Xiaoyu’s gaze had grown unfocused as she looked at Ye Xiaoxuan. “Husband…kiss me…” Before Ye Xiaoxuan could press his lips to hers, her head slumped, her breathing ceased.

“Xiaoyu!” Ye Xiaoxuan cried out to the heavens. The entire village erupted in chaos, with roosters crowing and dogs barking.

Jiaran and Ye Dajun rushed over, shocked by the sight of Wen Xiaoyu in Ye Xiaoxuan’s arms, not knowing what to do.

Jiaran reacted first. She had spent days with Wen Xiaoyu, growing deeply fond of this candid and sincere girl, treating her as a real sister. Now, seeing Wen Xiaoyu like this, Jiaran’s heart twisted in agony, as if witnessing a loved one die, her whole being consumed by grief.

Jiaran tried to embrace Xiaoyu, but Ye Xiaoxuan held her too tightly, refusing to let go. She could only lean over, pressing her cheek to Wen Xiaoyu’s, crying silently.

It was the second time Jiaran had ever shed tears—the first was when Ye Xiaoxuan was on the verge of death, and now, seeing Wen Xiaoyu’s breath stilled and her body growing cold.

Jiaran’s tears soaked Wen Xiaoyu’s face and dampened Ye Xiaoxuan’s chest.

Ye Dajun was the most clear-headed, suddenly slapping his thigh. “I’ll find Six-Finger Hao, get him to drive Xiaoyu to the county hospital!”

Within five minutes, Hao Six-Finger arrived at the door, tractor rumbling. Ye Xiaoxuan was about to carry Wen Xiaoyu aboard when Jiang Guihua came running out, arms full of quilts. “Wait!”

She layered the truck bed with soft bedding before allowing Ye Xiaoxuan on. Ignoring Ye Dajun and Jiaran’s protests, she climbed onto the truck herself, wiping her tears. “I need to stay with my daughter-in-law. If she doesn’t recover, I won’t come back.”

Jiaran also got into the truck bed, stopping Ye Dajun as he tried to follow. “Brother, you stay here. With me, Auntie, and Xiao San, it’s enough. Tomorrow, please ask for leave at school for me.”
