The big bald man was momentarily stunned, staring at Ye Xiaoxuan in disbelief, as if the person before him was not human at all, but some kind of monster. Then, unexpectedly, the bald man made a strange move: he took the razor and lightly sliced his own left forearm.

The sharp blade cut through his skin, exposing the pale flesh beneath, and blood quickly began to seep out, soon gushing forth and dripping down his arm onto his leg.

Hua Lingluo’s expression changed drastically. She grabbed the bald man’s elbow, pressing on the vein as she exclaimed, “Uncle Wen, what are you doing?”

Ye Xiaoxuan, equally bewildered, patted the bald man's head and said, “Even if you don’t like me, there’s really no need to commit suicide.”

The bald man stared wide-eyed at the wound on his forearm, then glanced at Ye Xiaoxuan, muttering, “How can this be?”

He then pressed the razor against Ye Xiaoxuan’s chest and slashed down with force. There was a sharp sound as the blade snapped, yet not a single mark was left on Ye Xiaoxuan’s body.

Even Hua Lingluo was dumbfounded, mouth agape, lost for words. She had always known Ye Xiaoxuan was unusual, but only now did she see just how extraordinary he truly was. Was he a hidden master, his martial prowess refined to the point of returning to simplicity, surpassing even a martial king, whose brow no longer bulged with power?

Yet even a martial king would not emerge unscathed from a knife’s slash. Iron Shirt or Golden Bell skills would at least leave some trace. But Ye Xiaoxuan’s body was like glass—no mark could ever be made.

Ye Xiaoxuan understood the looks on their faces and his own expression darkened as he fixed his gaze on the bald man.

Though the bald man’s actions did him no harm, costing only a shirt, Ye Xiaoxuan now saw clearly the depth of the man’s rejection and dislike. If not for the protective dragon mark on his body, he might not have survived this encounter.

Ye Xiaoxuan stared coldly at the bald man and said, “Do you realize I am your daughter’s boyfriend?”

Hua Lingluo interjected, “Xiaoxuan, don’t be angry. Uncle Wen just lost his temper. He’s always been careful with his own strength…”

“I wasn’t asking you!” Ye Xiaoxuan’s eyes flashed with a crimson light as he glared at Hua Lingluo. Her heart skipped a beat and she instinctively shrank back to the far end of the bed, her heart pounding wildly as she thought, “What razor-sharp eyes!”

Ye Xiaoxuan’s piercing gaze seemed to bore into the bald man’s soul; his tone was icy. “I asked—do you know I am Yu’er’s boyfriend?”

The bald man wanted to refuse to answer, but Ye Xiaoxuan’s words carried an authority that made defiance impossible, as if he were the master of all things and others could only bow in reverence. Even more terrifying were his eyes—like twin daggers, exposing every hidden corner.

The bald man shook his head, trying to rid himself of the fear this young man inspired, and sneered, “Did I ever give my consent?” But as soon as he spoke, he regretted it—by engaging, he had submitted to that overwhelming presence, deepening his own sense of dread.

“Hmph!” Ye Xiaoxuan let out a heavy snort, making the bald man’s heart tremble. “What era are we living in? Do we need your permission to fall in love?”

The bald man shouted furiously, “I am her father!”

Ye Xiaoxuan jumped down from the bed, opened the cabinet below, took out a new shirt, and slipped it on with a calm air. “That’s why I don’t want things to get too strained between us, so Yu’er doesn’t have to suffer. You may dislike me, but you have no right to interfere with our feelings for each other.”

The bald man’s eyes shifted as he looked at Ye Xiaoxuan. “If you want to be with my daughter, fine—one million.”

Ye Xiaoxuan was taken aback, frowning as he asked, “One million what?”

The bald man held up a single finger, sneering, “One million! It wasn’t easy raising my daughter. I expect her to provide for me in old age. If you’re as rich as Young Master Zhao, I’ll agree to let her be with you.”

With those words, Ye Xiaoxuan finally understood what kind of man the bald father was—a typical greedy parent, who saw his daughter as a way to earn money. Marrying her off was no different from selling her. He claimed it was for her lifelong security, but in truth, it was all about his own desire for wealth and comfort.

Ye Xiaoxuan truly despised people like this. He might tolerate others, but this man was Yu’er’s father. Yu’er had told him she lost her mother young and depended on her father, so he couldn’t afford to offend him.

Seeing Ye Xiaoxuan silent, the bald man scoffed. “I forgot you grew up in the countryside! Tell me, do you have a bathroom? My daughter has always loved cleanliness, growing up by the sea, bathing was her favorite thing! Do you have a computer? She spends most of her time at home playing on one! Do you have KFC or McDonald's? Not too much, just three or four visits a month, but not less either!”

Ye Xiaoxuan listened, stunned, his eyes lingering on the still sleeping Yu’er in the hospital bed. Only now did he realize that by becoming his girlfriend and staying in Reed Village, Yu’er had given up many comforts she was used to—she had made a great sacrifice.

And he had even forced her to take poison.

Ye Xiaoxuan almost wanted to grab the bald man’s razor and cut himself instead. Tenderly sitting at the bedside, he stroked Yu’er’s face and said to the bald man, “Give me some time. I will give Yu’er a happy home.”

The bald man glared back. “Fine! Then from now on, you’re not to see my daughter again. When I see that million, I’ll personally hire eight sedan bearers to carry her to your home.”

Ye Xiaoxuan lifted his head, staring at the bald man. “No! I will not be separated from Yu’er.”

The bald man snorted. “Then work hard! The sooner you meet my requirements, the sooner you can see Yu’er. I don’t want my precious daughter to suffer again—who knows if she’ll be able to pull through next time.”

Ye Xiaoxuan fell silent. This was the very problem he dreaded most. Yes, this time Yu’er healed herself, but what about next time?

He knew that someday he would take Yu’er to live wherever she wanted, whether in the city or the countryside, but that day was still far off—it would not come easily. Would Yu’er be able to wait for him?

Hua Lingluo sighed beside him. “Xiaoxuan, I know you care deeply for Yu’er, but Uncle Wen isn’t deliberately trying to break you up. He’s thinking about her future. I believe their relationship should be Yu’er’s own decision.”

Ye Xiaoxuan agreed—at this moment, it was the only way. He couldn’t stay here forever; the village still needed him, and there was much to be done. Now, with Yu’er’s father and sister watching over her, he could at least rest assured.
