Chapter Ninety-Three: A Direct Slap in the Face
At noon, the dining hall of Blue Emperor Academy was packed to the rafters. To the students, the cafeteria was a fine place, and mealtime was one of the rare pleasures amid their exhausting cultivation. Many of them gathered in twos and threes, chatting animatedly.
If they could fill their bellies and feast their eyes at the same time, that would be even better.
“Look, she’s here, over there!”
No one knew who cried out first, but in an instant all eyes shot in one direction. Everyone understood at once that only the appearance of a beauty could create such a scene. And this beauty’s status was no small matter, for almost every young man in the hall had set down his utensils and turned his attention toward the newcomer. That meant the woman who had appeared must be a true campus goddess to inspire such a commotion.
A girl in white, wearing a pair of cartoon-patterned slippers, walked into the cafeteria with a lazy slap-slap of her feet. She looked as though she were merely passing by without a care in the world, yet this seemingly casual girl immediately caused a sensation.
“It’s Zhuo Yuqing! The number one beauty, Zhuo Yuqing!”
“Really? I’ve never seen this legendary beauty before. Is she really that gorgeous? Move aside, don’t block me.”
“My God, she really is a super beauty! I was just feeling sorry for Lin Jiaming before. I heard she had almost been crowned the campus belle, only to be replaced by this girl who came out of nowhere. Now I see it—Zhuo Yuqing deserves it!”
“Of course. Lin Jia may be fashionable and modern, but does she have Zhuo Yuqing’s personality? Look at her—just a pair of slippers and ordinary clothes, yet the effect she creates is even more dramatic than Lin Jia in designer labels from head to toe. Lin Jia is more attractive because of her elegant fashion, but those plain clothes become as stylish as couture when worn by Zhuo Yuqing. That’s the difference!”
“Mm, exactly. I’m honestly jealous of those slippers. They get to lie beneath Zhuo Yuqing’s feet and be stepped on!”
“Is that how far you’ve fallen, you sick pervert!”
“...”
If there were people in this world born as heaven’s favorites, then Zhuo Yuqing was certainly one of them. Enjoying treatment fit for a princess, she strode forward proudly, yet she showed not the slightest trace of smugness at the attention she received from the young men. On the contrary, she even curled her lip.
“A bunch of boring people. So annoying.”
And yet the more proud Zhuo Yuqing appeared, the more admiration she won. After all, most men had some degree of queen complex; they especially adored beauties who stood high above them and treated them like toads beneath her feet.
Two other girls walked beside Zhuo Yuqing, her roommates, and they had a little charm of their own. Unfortunately, standing next to Zhuo Yuqing, no matter how much they preened, they were still tragically ignored.
One of them, somewhat slender, clicked her tongue and said, “Yuqing, I’m not daring to come get food with you next time. You’re too amazing. Look at those boys—they’re all staring at us because of you!”
Zhuo Yuqing said disdainfully, “Sara, why pay them any mind? Those boys are all full of hot air with nothing better to do.”
The other, a round-faced girl, said plaintively, “Yuqing, you really don’t seem to care at all. If I were like you and could get so much attention from boys wherever I went, I’d be unbelievably happy.”
Sara snorted. “Hmph, Lulu, you really are vain.”
The round-faced girl shot back, “Vanity is in everyone’s nature. Which girl doesn’t love beauty? Which girl doesn’t like being noticed?”
“Who says so? Yuqing isn’t like you!”
“Yuqing is different. How many Zhuo Yuqings are there in this world?”
“...”
After getting her food, Zhuo Yuqing and the other girls found a table and sat down. Truth be told, this number one beauty had no table manners to speak of while eating. Bits of vegetables and minced meat even clung to the corners of her mouth, and she would stick out her tongue to lick them away. Yet somehow, no matter what Zhuo Yuqing did, she never looked vulgar. On the contrary, as she licked at her lips, she drove countless young men into wild imagination, their blood surging hot.
Unbearable. Truly unbearable. The sight of the campus belle eating was itself an irresistible temptation.
Then someone came up beside her.
“Hi, classmate Zhuo Yuqing.”
Zhuo Yuqing looked up and saw that the speaker was a blond young man with a handsome, striking face. His smile was as bright as sunlight, easily winning the goodwill of others, especially girls.
This was Kevin. Ever since the first time he saw Zhuo Yuqing and was stunned by her beauty, Kevin had become as lovesick as many other young men, unable to taste his food. Originally his target had been Alicia, but now he felt that Zhuo Yuqing was even more charming than Alicia, so he changed his aim and wanted to win the beauty over as soon as possible.
Kevin believed that with his handsome looks he ought to catch Zhuo Yuqing’s attention, so he deliberately put on the kind of smile that could make countless girls swoon.
Who would have thought Zhuo Yuqing would frown instead.
“Who are you?”
Kevin felt extremely awkward at that. He and Zhuo Yuqing were in the same first-year class—could it be that the campus belle did not remember him at all?
The boys at the nearby tables were secretly delighted when they heard Zhuo Yuqing’s words. Kevin, Kevin, don’t think that just because you’re the campus heartthrob you can run wild among the flowers. Zhuo Yuqing simply doesn’t give you the time of day!
At this moment, Kevin’s attempt at conversation made his intentions plain to everyone. After all, birds of a feather flock together; especially with someone like Kevin, who was basically the public enemy of men whenever he competed for women.
The round-faced girl who loved to dream of being a princess said with a starstruck expression, “Yuqing, this is Kevin from our class—he’s also the number one campus heartthrob!”
Kevin was given a way down from the awkwardness, and he flashed a charming smile at the round-faced girl, nearly dazzling the infatuated girl into fainting. After all, Kevin was exactly the type of prince charming she had imagined in her heart.
“Oh?” Zhuo Yuqing tilted her head and thought for a moment. “I think there may be someone like that.”
Kevin was even more depressed at that, while the nearby onlookers were practically bursting with delight, savoring his misfortune.
Zhuo Yuqing then asked, “What do you want?”
Kevin coughed lightly and pointed to the seat in front of Zhuo Yuqing. “Well, the hall is too crowded and I can’t find a seat. Would it be all right if I sit here?”
Clearly, that was only an excuse. This time, Zhuo Yuqing did not hesitate in the slightest. She said flatly, “No. I don’t like people blocking my view.”
Kevin was almost spitting blood. Alicia had at least been lukewarm and distant, but Zhuo Yuqing didn’t even bother to save him the slightest shred of face.
The young men nearby were nearly rolling with laughter. Kevin, Kevin—now that is a total slap in the face. So you can have this day too! At the same time, they had to admit that Zhuo Yuqing’s distinctive personality truly was not exaggerated. She really was exactly as the rumors said. Today, they had finally seen it with their own eyes. No matter what campus heartthrob or handsome prince you were, in her eyes you were nothing but a fart.
