Chapter 17: Priceless Treasure
By the time Shen Xin brought the doctor over, there was no trace of Yu Yanan in the ward.
“Where is she?”
The doctor asked suspiciously.
“She was just on the bed!”
Since Shen Xin had booked a private room, there were no other patients present. He glanced around and noticed the window had been opened, with the protective railing outside smashed, leaving a huge hole.
A chill ran down his spine. He rushed to the window, craned his neck to look down, and in the darkness below, he could vaguely make out a figure in a hospital gown sprinting away.
“She’s downstairs!”
The doctor hurried to the window as well. They didn’t believe a patient could jump down—the ward was on the fifth floor, after all. Jumping from there would be fatal.
Shen Xin dared not jump, so he quickly turned and raced down the stairs.
When he reached downstairs, Yu Yanan had already made it to the hospital’s perimeter wall.
“Yanan, come back! Don’t run!”
But Yu Yanan ignored him and leapt over the wall.
Shen Xin quickened his pace, flung a throwing knife toward the wall, used it as a foothold to vault onto the wall, fixed his gaze on Yu Yanan some thirty meters away, and teleported her back down to the wall’s base. Then, he leaped over and caught the raging Yu Yanan, gently soothing her, “Yanan, don’t be afraid. I’m here. Don’t be afraid.”
Unexpectedly, Yu Yanan sank her teeth into Shen Xin’s shoulder, voraciously drinking his blood.
Once she had her fill, her eyes gradually cleared. Realizing she was biting Shen Xin and feeding on his blood, she released him immediately, terrified, and shrieked.
“It’s alright, Yanan. I’m fine,” Shen Xin assured her, though his heart sank. If his guess was correct, Yu Yanan had been bitten by a vampire and was now one herself.
Now that he had been bitten by Yanan, would he become a vampire as well?
“Sob… Shen Xin, how did I become like this? I’m sorry, I hurt you. Sob, sob…”
Yu Yanan collapsed onto Shen Xin’s shoulder, weeping loudly.
“Hold on, I need to retrieve my throwing knife.”
As soon as Shen Xin turned to think about collecting his weapon, the knife shot over the wall and landed in his hand.
He had no time for further reflection. “Yanan, I’m taking you to see Sister Dan. Maybe she has a solution.”
“Alright.”
Yu Yanan released Shen Xin. Together, they found a cab and headed to their rented apartment.
Shen Xin rode his electric scooter, taking Yu Yanan with him to the compound.
By now, Yu Yanan understood what had happened to her. She trembled as she asked, “Shen Xin, what if Sister Dan can’t help us?”
“What then? We’ll be a pair of fugitive blood thieves. Anyway, I won’t bite anyone.”
“But… it was really hard to control myself just now.”
“No worries. If you ever lose control, we’ll chain ourselves up with iron and keep blood packs nearby. After a few rounds, you’ll get used to it.”
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry! I dragged you into this mess. I’m a disaster!”
Yu Yanan cried again.
“What disaster? We’ll face whatever comes. Actually, being a vampire is rather cool. I heard you can live forever.”
Shen Xin tried to look on the bright side.
“Oh, I’ve watched Twilight. Their vampires live for hundreds of years and have all kinds of superpowers. If it’s really like that, it’s not so bad. But… can vampires have children?”
“Uh, probably. I’m not sure. Let’s not worry about those details; let’s ask Sister Dan first.”
By the time they reached the compound, it was already past ten at night.
The compound was silent; only Sister Dan and Tang Ziran were there.
Tang Ziran was lounging on the sofa in the hall, playing on her phone. When she saw Shen Xin and Yu Yanan return, she immediately stood up and asked with concern, “Yanan, are you feeling better?”
Yu Yanan had met Tang Ziran a few times before. To be honest, she had once been jealous of Tang Ziran, but on the way here, Shen Xin had told her what happened today, and now she was full of gratitude toward Tang Ziran.
“My injury’s healed, but a new problem has arisen.”
Shen Xin interjected, “Is Sister Dan asleep?”
“She shouldn’t be. Sister Dan usually stays up late—sometimes you can hear her opening doors at two or three in the morning.”
“Great, I’ll go find her. Yanan, come with me.”
They knocked on Sister Dan’s door, which opened automatically. Sister Dan sat cross-legged on the floor, eyes closed, and asked softly, “You’ve come to me so late? What’s the matter?”
“Sister Dan, Yanan was bitten by a vampire, and now she’s bitten me.”
“What? You were bitten?”
Sister Dan sprang up, grabbed Shen Xin’s arm, and after a long moment said, “You’re fine. Your body has assimilated the vampire genes.”
“Ah, so I’m still normal?”
“Not exactly. You’re half-human, half-vampire now. You’ve actually benefited: you’ve absorbed the advantages of a vampire without the drawbacks. Tsk tsk, what secret is your body hiding?”
A fiery curiosity flashed in Sister Dan’s eyes.
“Ahem, Sister Dan, please check on Yanan quickly.”
“Oh, alright.”
Sister Dan released Shen Xin’s arm and took hold of Yu Yanan’s. After a while, she concluded, “Definitely a low-level vampire, but you’ve just absorbed Shen Xin’s blood, so you’ve evolved a bit. If you keep drinking his blood, you might be just like him. But Shen Xin, are you willing?”
Shen Xin replied without hesitation, “Of course I am.”
“Tsk tsk, such a devoted soul. Since you’re so generous, can you give your sister some of your blood as well? Not much, just 200 milliliters every quarter. I won’t take it for free—one million each time.”
“My goodness, Sister Dan, are you serious? Is my blood really that precious?”
“Absolutely. It’s the first time I’ve seen someone capable of improving and assimilating vampire blood.”
“Alright, it’s a deal. Sister Dan, does Yanan need any other treatment?”
“No, just feed her your blood once a week and she’ll be as healthy as anyone—actually, even better.”
“Ha ha, thank you, Sister Dan!”
The huge burden in Shen Xin’s heart was finally lifted, and he laughed loudly with relief.
Hearing she’d need to drink Shen Xin’s blood to stay normal, Yu Yanan was guilt-ridden. She silently resolved to buy more expensive supplements for him, and to ask her father for more money every month.
In fact, Yu Yanan’s father gave her twenty thousand yuan in pocket money each month, though most of it she saved.
Once they relaxed, both felt utterly exhausted and went to sleep in the compound.
Shen Xin had been sleeping there lately, and had his own room in the compound.
The two slept together. After all they’d been through that day, they soon drifted into deep slumber.
A smile crept across Sister Dan’s face. “Heh, this time I’ve really struck gold. Shen Xin’s blood would fetch a fortune in Holy City. Tsk tsk, I wonder how many cultivation resources it could buy me. I’ll definitely advance another step. Patriarch, you exiled me to Ox City, but I still managed to turn misfortune into blessing! Ha ha ha!”
